Sir, – Further to “‘The timing quite literally could not be worse’: Coffee retailers warn trouble brewing over ‘latte levy’”, News, November 22nd), the “latte levy” is another virtue signal from the Green Party and its supporters. What exactly do they hope to achieve by imposing a tax on an already overburdened sector that has absorbed increased costs across all elements of their business? Food inflation, energy and the reintroduction of 13 per cent vat rate, which is particularly unfair to small local businesses who cannot charge what they like, unlike hotel groups.
Could someone please explain why, when my small business switched to a compostable cup at greater expense three years ago, I now find that my willingness to go green amounts to naught? If it is a landfill issue, then perhaps the green dragons might be better to look at other options such as online suppliers. I recently placed an order for something that could have been delivered in an envelope and was greatly amused when it arrived in an outsized cardboard box complete with bubble wrap. – Yours, etc,
