Sir, – Given the sensitivity and concerns regarding the role of the Garda deputy commissioner with responsibility for policing and security, including intelligence, with the position to be filled by Deputy Commissioner Shawna Coxon, a Canadian citizen, surely the Minister for Justice along with the Minister for Finance could instruct their officials to expedite the review regarding pensions and taxation (“Senior Garda intelligence and security role set to be filled by Canadian officer”, News, January 27th).
The problem regarding pensions and taxation has been evident for some time, highlighted recently when no Garda members applied for the role of deputy commissioner.
Given the importance of the role, you would have expected Minister for Justice Helen McEntee to act swiftly in order to address the issue. – Yours, etc,
