Sir, – I suggest that politicians unite and cancel all St Patrick’s Day junkets worldwide in solidarity with the Palestinian people’s plight.
The Government and indeed the Opposition have expressed grave concern on a daily basis. This is now the time to back this talk with action on a day it will matter most, our national holiday.
This would be a powerful gesture from all our political parties. – Yours, etc,

Sir – One can sympathise with those who, for genuine reasons, are calling for the Taoiseach to boycott the annual visit to the White House but such an act would be unwise.
It’s of great importance that the Taoiseach continues with the traditional St Patrick’s Day White House visit.
Such a visit affords the Taoiseach the opportunity to put Ireland’s case on all matters, including Gaza, directly to President Biden.
The value and importance of such a personal encounter cannot be overestimated.
It also guarantees our Government’s continued influence in Washington. – Yours, etc,
