Sir, – I refer to the article “Bill to ban investment in illegal Israeli settlements could see Ireland become international outlier” (News, March 20th). I would like to propose an alternative way of framing this proposal: “Bill to ban investment in illegal Israeli settlements could see Ireland become international leader.”
The illegal settlements are just that: illegal. They represent a serious violation of international law, and knowingly supporting strategic investments in illegally occupied land is tantamount to condoning these violations.
International investment cannot and should not be seen as separate and unconnected to the wider international legal and political context we inhabit. – Yours, etc,
