The case for new Dublin orbital motorway

Regional and national transport plans

Letter of the Day
Letter of the Day

Sir, – The M50 motorway is congested because it has been hijacked by commuter traffic. The result is that national interconnecting traffic from the radiating motorways to Dublin suffers huge delays most of every weekday. This is a terrible waste of resources and has serious cost implications for fuel consumption and national delivery and manufacturing costs and charges. It also reduces connectivity between the various parts of our country. Some time ago the National Roads Authority planned an outer route about 20 miles further inland to divert national traffic away from the M50 and to interconnect the growing eastern regional counties. The time has come, with population change and demographic growth, to have a fresh look at these proposals and re-establish them as an essential component of the regional and national transport plans. – Yours, etc,

G CLARKE,

Navan,

Co Meath.
