Sir, – Barry Walsh seems to suggest that Catholic voters in the US have been cynically abandoned by the Democratic hierarchy in recent years in a “lurch to the left” on the moral issues of the day (Letters, September 13th).
The reality is that these voters now see that Donald Trump’s manipulation of the US Supreme Court is the only way in which mainstream Catholic teachings can be restored to American life.
In relation to U-turns, only last month Mr Trump backtracked on his support for the protection of abortion rights in Florida in response to a backlash from his conservative supporters.
I am afraid that in the US and everywhere else, politics is the art of running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. – Yours, etc,
