Wasteful spending

Inheritance tax income

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott
The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Dermot Casey argues in favour of maintaining the inheritance tax on revenue-raising grounds (Letters, September 19th). He writes that the tax raises €500 million annually, which pays for critical services.

However, I question his knowledge of the wasteful nature of Government spending and what is meant by critical services. To put the amount in context does he regard the €725 million bailout of RTÉ as critical? Or what about the €335,000 bike shed?

There are far less distressful ways to raise revenue than a death tax targeting the loved ones of the recently deceased. – Yours, etc,

TIMOTHY GRAHAM,
