Sir, – Denis Staunton’s analysis of Donald Trump’s cabinet choices and policies signals a return defined by loyalty, retribution, and a disregard for democratic norms (“Trump’s return compels Europe to consider its strategic future”, World, November 16th). His foreign policy team leans heavily on hawkish figures, yet internal divisions reveal uncertainty about America’s role in global conflicts.
Europe, understandably alarmed by Mr Trump’s erratic leadership, faces a pivotal moment to reconsider its strategic autonomy, strengthen its defences, and reduce dependence on an unreliable ally. This challenge is also an opportunity to reshape Europe’s position in a polycentric world.
The old maxim that “when America sneezes, Europe catches a cold” rings true but relying on the same doctor for a cure is folly.
Mr Trump’s return should compel Europe to bolster its immune system and set its own course, embracing the maturity of a continent ready to chart its destiny. – Yours, etc,
