Sir, – Thanks so much to Séamus White (letters 3rd Feb) for reminding us that plenty of people can survive and thrive without a driving licence. Added to those for whom not driving is a choice, there are many people who can’t drive due to age, physical ability, economic circumstances, or because they have nowhere to store a car. Other people own cars, but don’t use them for every journey.
Given the current weather, I’d like to make two suggestions to people who can drive, which will make journeys safer and more pleasant for everyone else. Firstly, when you are approaching a large puddle, if you slow down a bit you can avoid drenching the people walking right beside you on the footpath. And secondly, if you are intending to change your direction of travel, please indicate this to your fellow road users by means of the handy little lights your vehicle has for this very purpose. - Yours, etc,
SIOBHÁN McNAMARA,
Dublin 12.
