Sir, – I watched the abuse Rory McIlroy received from spectators at the Ryder Cup in New York last September.
Watching the golf coverage on Sunday night at WM Phoenix Open in Scottsdale, it was harrowing to watch the intimidation that Hideki Matsuyama from Japan received from the spectators.
He was leading the tournament with two holes to play, and when putting on the 17th, he was booed and had to walk away and readdress the putt, which he then missed. Again on 18th tee, a spectator shouted an offensive expletive as he addressed his drive. He again had to readdress his drive and consequently hooked his tee shot into trouble. The American commentators stayed dumb on both incidents.
What has happened to the etiquette of spectator golf?
