Sir, – Your report Cyclist ‘convinced he would die’ after being driven over by SUV making illegal turn” (News, February 12th) should be essential reading for our lawmakers.

Incidents like this highlight the growing concern about the size and weight of many modern vehicles, particularly large SUVs, and the risks they pose to vulnerable road users.

In early 2025 my son and I witnessed a distressing incident in which two children were struck by car while on the pedestrian crossing outside their school. One of them was thrown forward and ended up beneath the front right wheel.

An emergency officer at the scene said she was “lucky” the car involved weighed only around 900kg. Had it been a heavier SUV, her injuries could have been far more severe.

Experiences like this underline the need for a serious conversation about vehicle size, road safety and the protection of those most at risk. – Yours, etc,
