Undocumented Irish and illegal immigrants

Why the discrepancy in terminology?

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott
The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, –“Undocumented Irish” is the phrase our politicians, NGOs and media outlets almost invariably use when referring to illegal Irish immigrants in the United States.

Here, those who enter our country unlawfully are deemed to be “illegal immigrants”.

Why the discrepancy in terminology when referring to Irish illegals in the US and illegal immigrants in Ireland? – Yours, etc,

PAUL DELANEY,

Dalkey,

Co Dublin.
