The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, – Both my wife and I are in our 80th year, and are State contributory pensioners, and have been tenants of Dublin City Council for nearly 40 years. Throughout that time we have been assessed accordingly when working for our rent.

This morning we were shocked to receive notification our weekly rent was to be increased by approximately €24 per week. As our household circumstances have not changed since we retired many years ago, we have now sought an explanation from Dublin City Council as to how our rent was calculated.

Throughout our working lives we have always paid our taxes and don’t expect towards the end of our lives when given an increase in our state pension in one month to see it gone three months later. Has political Ireland lost its moral compass? – Yours, etc,

PETER MULVANY,

Clontarf,

Dublin 3.
