Sir, – Further to Sorcha Ní Leannáin’s excellent letter regarding leaving the Catholic Church (Letters, February 26th), it is indeed a strange organisation that admits members without their consent, before they can even talk. As for leaving, one might describe the Catholic Church’s policy as akin to that of Hotel California: you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.
One wonders what church membership numbers would look like if the church waited until people had reached adulthood before admitting them as members and allowed people to leave whenever they wished.
Then, rather strangely, some people highlight the still relatively high number of nominal Catholics, while at the same time bemoaning their a la carte attitude to the church, its dogmas and its teachings. The reality is that the Catholic Church is the chief architect of this state of affairs.
