Sir,- Patrick Judge (Letters, March 2nd) is dismissive of concerns for a list of protected species, which he speculates might interfere with proposals to draw water from the river Shannon. He urges us to “be grown up”, by which I presume he means joining him in his attitude to the protection of “otters, natterjack toads, bees, waterfowl, bats, lizards, etc.”
He concludes with the saying that ‘We will survive by looking after one another’. I am all for looking after one another, but one thing is sure – we won’t survive long if we forget that our survival is utterly dependent on the survival of a vast array of other species, and when we humans are humble enough to accept that, we really will be grown up. – Yours, etc,
Katherine Quirke,
Dún Laoghaire,
