Easing Dublin Airport’s passenger strain

Belfast can help lower over-reliance

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - BBC Northern Ireland recently sent a reporter to Dublin Airport to interview people returning to the North from the UAE.

This in itself is an acknowledgment of the regularity with which Dublin Airport is used by long-distance travellers from the North.

It might be queried whether more of this travel component could be accommodated at Belfast International Airport; any such shift could significantly reduce pressure on passenger numbers at Dublin Airport.

Improved access to Belfast International would greatly help in this regard and the restoration of the adjoining underused railway line would surely be of great benefit.

For this project to be most effective, it would be necessary to construct a short link from Moira to the Lisburn-Antrim line. This would facilitate direct access to Belfast International from wide areas to the south, and indeed from areas south of the Border. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL WALSH,

Clontarf,

Dublin 3.
