Sir, – Sophie McDermott (Letters, March 12th) criticises the decision to omit two sections of the agreed Cabinteely greenway. This decision was underpinned by a conclusive verdict in a public consultation run by the local council on the project regarding the proposed route through the residential estate of approximately 600 homes.
This contentious part of the route had 55 per cent opposition within the consultation outcome. I attended two meetings involving local residents in 2024 where there was a febrile atmosphere in relation to discussion on this route’s proposed inclusion.
Residents wanted their existing amenity green space and road preserved, and a majority of councillors voted to respect this perspective.
The estimated cost of the project as finally decided upon by councillors is set to be €3.7 million. If the two sections aforementioned had been included, the cost would have been estimated at €4.7 million.

The pro-cycling activists who contacted councillors to retain the two sections now omitted should not be disappointed with this significant compromise decision to build new cycling infrastructure with multimillion euro investment.
The compromise also includes a better option to facilitate commuting cyclists, as it contains a clearer link to the N11 at Clonkeen Road connecting to the rest of the greenway. – Yours, etc,
Cllr JOHN KENNEDY,
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Offices,
