Sir, - As a learner who recently returned to an Gaeilge, I have consumed quite a lot of content on TG4, especially Seinnteoir TG4. It has been well discussed at this stage, but I’ll add my voice to those who are very impressed with the production quality, variety and volume of programmes available – they have truly been knocking it out of the park these past few years.
One request I have, which I know is shared by other Irish speakers and learners, is that they please make Irish subtitles available, As a starting point, it would be nice to have this as an accompaniment for any newly-commissioned programmes, but preferably, it would tie in with the full catalogue. While there are some benefits, in terms of learning, from listening to Gaeilge and following along with the English translation, it is far more valuable in my experience to be reading the Irish.
I’m sure translation and transcription are not minor jobs, but there is no shortage of qualified people available to do the work. It would be a very significant help for students and others seeking immersion in an teanga. - Yours, etc,
DAVE McGINN,
