Sir, – Germany, with a population of 83 million, this week announced a fuel support package worth €1.6 billion. Ireland, population about 5.4 million, announced a package worth €0.5 billion.
Per capita the Irish package is roughly five times larger than the German one, but it has still been criticised by protesters and Opposition TDs as “insufficient” and “paltry”.
Either my sums are wrong or the level of expectations are staggering and unsustainable. – Yours, etc,
