The “r” had a fringe like Ringo Starr’s

The Irish Times - Letters to the Editor.

Sir, - In the late 1960s, there were many old schoolbooks still in circulation printed in the old cló Gaelach, or Irish script. Despite the distinctive beauty of the script as mentioned by your correspondents (Letters, April 29th), I remember struggling to differentiate between the lower case “r” and “s”. One enlightened Christian Brother explained to me that the “r” had a fringe like Ringo Starr’s.

The aforementioned Christian Brother, it is worth noting, was in charge of the school tin whistle band. I was the drummer and our signature tune was Yellow Submarine. – Yours, etc,

CHRIS FITZPATRICK,
