Sir, – Enda Cullen contends that Ireland should embrace more personalised learning in our education system, an approach that provides instruction, pace and learning materials to individual students’ needs (Letters, May 6th).
While well intentioned, this overlooks the realities of classroom management and the workload of the class teacher, who often must support 30-plus pupils / students in a diverse mainstream class.
In the absence of adequate resources, training and time, personalised learning is impractical and at present, unachievable within our school system. Nor should we be hasty in discarding conventional teaching methods, which continue to provide a structured, calm and respectful learning environment for most students. – Yours, etc,
KEVIN MCLOUGHLIN,
