Sir, – Thank you to Rosemary Rooney (Letters, June 13th) and Bláithín Fitzgerald (Letters, June 10th) for highlighting an issue which I think is essentially wildlife crime and should be treated as such.
Under the Wildlife Act, it is against the law to cut, burn or destroy vegetation between March 1st and August 31st to prevent the disturbance to June 10th.
It is time for stricter enforcement of this law. The National Parks & Wildlife Service should be contacted by the public if they witness hedge cutting taking place during this period. The callous disregard for nature and bending of the rules during this time period is simply unacceptable.
Nature in Ireland needs all the help it can get. – Yours, etc,
