An Erasmus for Irish?

Spending six months in a Gaeltacht would greatly improve students’ Irish language skills

Letters to the Editor. Illustration: Paul Scott

Sir, – With reference to numerous letters on learning Irish as a spoken language, I suggest that it is time to commence a Gaeltacht-based programme similar in time and content to the very successful Erasmus scheme.

Under this scheme students spend some months in another country where they complete their traineeship. If students were to spend at least six months resident in a Gaeltacht their Irish would greatly improve. This would prove especially beneficial to student teachers. Fé mar a deirtear: Taithí a dheineann máistreacht. Practice may not always make perfect but it most certainly greatly helps. – Yours, etc,
