Sir, – Reading Sarah Moss’s column (“My son is moving abroad and wanted me to share my recipes. I couldn’t oblige.” July 27th) on her challenge writing her muffin and cookies recipes for her son who is leaving home, I was reminded of a letter my late mother wrote to me from the west of Ireland 40 years ago, when I was newly married.
I had asked her to write down her brown scone recipe. I found the letter a few years back. The method was very imprecise:
“The mix should be not too wet, not too dry.”
“Almost fill the mug with buttermilk.”

All of which was no help to me as an inexperienced cook.
She finished off the letter by saying: “The mug in question is the white enamel one I have. It’s a fairly big mug but ye may not have any big mugs in Stillorgan.” – Yours, etc,
