Sir, – Recent correspondence describes the potential of country boreens and challenges with access to certain areas for recreational use.
We should include the vast network of bog and forestry roads in the conversation. There is at least 10,000km of forestry and bog tracks already available with a solid surface, no traffic and proximity to nature.
Many of these are already accessible but most of them lead nowhere, contained to a single landholding. A significant proportion are owned by the state via Coillte and Bord na Móna already. We could join up some of these to create endless opportunities for off-road recreational adventure travel at a minimal cost.
No tarmac is needed – bikes and boots work on gravel.

No signage is needed either – a good website allowing route selection with the possibility of downloading or printing off your chosen route will work.
We just need someone to join the dots. – Yours, etc,
BRIAN O’DOHERTY,
Delgany,
Wicklow.
