AI helped me fix my faulty MacBook – humans told me I had to buy a new one

Sir, – I recently brought my 10-year-old MacBook to a laptop repair shop after encountering a software problem. I was informed, with the solemnity usually reserved for a terminal diagnosis, that the software was hopelessly out of date and that I needed to update my laptop to the latest model.

Seeking a second opinion, I went to a well-known multinational electronic retailer. Remarkably, I received precisely the same diagnosis. The old laptop was finished and it was time to purchase a new one.

However, my Spidey sense suggested that I was perhaps being fobbed off. So I decided to see whether my new best friend, Mr/Ms AI, could shed some light on my problem. Soon enough, AI had me in the core of the laptop rewriting code on its explicit instruction. Presto. Fixed!

And, might I add, with zero technological expertise on my behalf. My 10-year-old Apple MacBook lives on. I’m now left wondering whether humans are all they’re cracked up to be or whether I should simply start taking my computer problems to the machines. – Yours, etc,
