Still standing

The custom of offering your seat on the bus or train to an elderly or frail person is dying out

The Irish Times – Letters to the Editor

Sir, – Unfortunately, the experience of older passengers left standing on public transport, as outlined by Dick Byrne (Letters, October 5th), is all too common. Last week while travelling on a full bus out to Fairview, I saw two young schoolboys in their uniforms who remained seated despite frailer passengers standing beside them.

Sadly, the idea of showing courtesy has been lost along with many other social graces. – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL STOREY,

Glencar,

Co Sligo.
