RTB sanctions fail to deter landlords

Residential Tenancies Board efforts to pursue cases of wrongful eviction are welcome, but its sanctions are not sufficient

Sir, – It’s positive news that the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) is pursuing cases of wrongful eviction such as the one reported on this week (“Tenant who hired private investigator to surveil home after eviction notice awarded damages,” Housing and Planning, October 27th).

Hiring a private investigator is considerable effort, and presumably cost, to go to. The sanction in this case amounted to €837.90 in moving costs and €500 in damages. The average rent in Dublin is €2,700 per month. The average Airbnb listing in Dublin charges between €1,500 and €1,850 per week.

The sanctions imposed by the RTB are not a deterrent to landlords, that much is clear to both the dogs and the tenants in the street. – Yours, etc,

NIALL MURPHY,

Glenageary,

Co Dublin.
