A big noise at 'Julius Caesar'

Madam, - It appears no longer possible to escape from unnecessary and unnecessarily loud music everywhere

Madam, - It appears no longer possible to escape from unnecessary and unnecessarily loud music everywhere. Until last Friday night I had thought that the legitimate theatre was still spared. However, at the Abbey Theatre's production of Julius Caesar, from the time the auditorium doors opened until the play commenced and again for the duration of the interval, the audience had large sections of Bach's St Matthew Passion imposed on them at an unacceptably high volume. To make matters worse, the relevance of this particular work to the play escaped me and was not explained in the programme notes! - Yours, etc,
