Sir, – The Taoiseach's statement that "doctors have a duty of candour" is to be welcomed (News, April 26th).
The current “open disclosure” policy is unfortunately purely voluntary and there are zero consequences for non-compliance. Our legislators have the power to change this by implementing a statutory duty of candour. Recent events have sadly shown that the voluntary measure is insufficient and a statutory obligation now needs to be enacted as a matter of urgency. – Yours, etc,
