Sir, – I would like to propose a new way of looking at car tax, which would tax the biggest users of fuel in a more transparent manner.
The infrastructures for my proposal are already in place thereby making it a cost-efficient model to implement.
I propose charging each vehicle using public roadways a registration charge of €150 per annum. The current tax infrastructure could easily facilitate this straightforward charge, with no need for CO2 rates, or engine sizes.
Then, I propose adding 2 cent to the cost of a litre of petrol, lPG and diesel. This would raise a similar revenue to the current system. However, bigger users would pay more tax through the additional fuel purchases, and lesser users would still contribute, but in a much more equitable duty.
This model is currently operational in Australia and works very well. The biggest users of public roads cause the most damage, pollute more, and therefore pay more tax. – Yours, etc,
WILLIAM
