Madam, - I second Carmel Courtney's disapproval of the Taoiseach's appearance, symbolic begging bowl in hand, with President George Bush (March 22nd).
We all know that Ireland continues to benefit in many ways from American (especially Irish-American) interest in our affairs, but surely there is no need for the prime minister of a supposedly independent state to pay yearly homage to the most murderous US regime in modern history.
Self-interest and diplomatic cap-tipping have their place, but a more appropriate way should be devised to symbolise and celebrate the historic links between our two countries. Should this not be an issue in the coming election - or does nobody care? - Yours, etc.
