Sir, – I cannot speak for the rest of the country, but the recent weather in west Mayo has been absolutely fantastic for gardeners. After a difficult spring and early summer, the recent combination of regular heavy rainfall, long sunny spells and temperatures in the high teens, day and night, has meant the gardens from Mulraney, through Newport, Westport and onward to Louisburgh are a sight to behold.
The symphony of colour and the individual displays, be they from a few pots in doorways and window sills to the larger gardens, are a joy to behold.
Professionally presented gardens in Dublin and elsewhere are impressive in their own right, but I contend they are no match for the sheer beauty, variety and individuality currently on display in the gardens of the west. Yours, etc,
GRAEME GUTHRIE,
Westport,
Co Mayo.
