Sir, – Dara Calleary TD has it all wrong. Farmers aren't the "bogeymen of climate change". ("Farmers angry at being portrayed as 'bogeymen' of climate change," November 3rd)
We all are. Now that we have digested our collective astonishment and outrage that avocados come from far away, we must apply the same scrutiny to other items in our shopping baskets.
Why do Irish supermarkets carry apples from New Zealand? Why is supermarket fruit and veg enveloped in plastic? Every choice makes a difference. Demand better. Put your cash where your conscience is.
Don’t believe the consumerist hype about what you “deserve” – whether it’s strawberries in December, steak, or a flight to the sun. Ask what humanity deserves, what future generations deserve.
Make choices you don’t need to be ashamed of. We can all make a difference, starting from where we are.
– Yours, etc,
ANNE BYRNE,
Donard, Co Wicklow.
