Sir, – The agency that regulates Irish Water has increased its bonuses to staff by 15 per cent ("Irish Water regulator splashes out ¤340,000 in staff bonuses", December 27th).
Did revenue at Irish Water increase by 15 per cent? Were costs at Irish Water reduced by 15 per cent over the period? Did Irish Water increase its supply by 15 per cent? Did Irish Water fix 15 per cent of leaks last year?
No, but the regulator and his staff are rushed off their feet dealing with complaints, the poor lambs, so a hefty bonus for having to deal with the pesky public is in order.
This self-awarded and outrageous bonus smacks of the golden era of financial and banking “regulation” from 2001 to 2008, and encapsulates why I, for one, will never pay water charges until the entire system is dismantled and made fit for purpose. – Yours, etc,
JOE HACKETT,
Dalkey, Co Dublin.
