Sir, – Readers of The Irish Times will recall as I do the proposal to build an underground car park in Trinity’s College Park some years ago. When alumni of the college heard of this, there was a public outcry and the plan was swiftly abandoned.
The present proposal is to erect an exhibition to house the Book of Kells on the Nassau Street side of College Park.
As a fellow of the college I would prefer to see the exhibition in New Square or Library Square. A more imaginative solution might be to locate the exhibition in Kells itself for the duration of the renovation of the Old Library, thus strengthening the relationship between Trinity and Kells and, indeed, the broader Irish public.
