Cameron's EU referendum pledge

Sir, – Mark Curran (January 25th) states, “The EU has always been upfront about putting forward its fundamental aims”

Sir, – Mark Curran (January 25th) states, “The EU has always been upfront about putting forward its fundamental aims”. I reject this statement as populist and misleading, especially where Ireland is concerned. Politicians of all hues have repeatedly stated in referendum after referendum that a new treaty was required to make the EU work more smoothly. They have never been honest enough to say that a federal superstate is the ultimate aim of the decades of insipid treaties.

As an Irish citizen I have absolutely no desire to be swallowed whole by a carnivorous federal Europe with obvious latent colonial tendencies.

The scare tactics regularly employed by pro-European campaigners to browbeat us into accepting a Franco-Prussian-led Frankenstein would be soundly defeated by transparent Yes/No vote on our future within Europe. – Yours, etc,
