Sir, – Without passing judgment on Gerry Maher's assessment (May 16th) of those whose opinions appear on the letters pages as "complainers and knockers", or even "begrudgers", I would like to be the first to welcome him to our ranks. – Yours, etc,
CHRISTOPHER
McMAHON,
Castleknock, Dublin 15.

Sir , – In response to Gerry Maher’s letter on the depression that descends on him when reading the letters page, may I add a few words to explain the begrudgers. To misquote George Bernard Shaw, reasonable letter writers adapt themselves to the world; the unreasonable ones persist in trying to adapt the world to themselves. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable letter writers. – Yours, etc,
DERMOT O’ROURKE,
Lucan,
Co Dublin.
