Madam, - Perhaps the Government's credibility salvage operation can begin with the use of recent tax evasion windfalls to help some shamefully neglected causes. It could make a start with the Carmichael Centre, Ireland's first, largest and busiest centre for voluntary groups.
I recently discovered that this extremely important centre is set to close on July 9th, due to lack of Government funding, with redundancy notices served to its staff. At a time when the Government is swimming in unexpected millions, and leading companies have been caught cheating us of similar amounts, it is morally repugnant that the future of so many voluntary groups can be knowingly denied.
If the Carmichael Centre, a testimony to the selflessness of thousands of Irish people, is guaranteed its relatively inexpensive life-blood, it would at least remind us that this ailing Government has a heart. - Yours, etc.,
SEAMUS LYNCH, Seaview, Portrane, Co Dublin.
