Madam, - In response to Frank McDonald's article of May 3rd headed "Harmony of Liffey quays key to plans for Clarence", we, TASCQ, the traders group in Temple Bar, welcome the proposed restoration and redevelopment planned by the Clarence Hotel.

It is no secret that East Essex Street has long needed some attention as part of the central spine of Temple Bar.

Indeed, the 2004 Howley Harrington report identified East Essex Street as a problem area, stating that there was a lack of activity on the street and the stretch was bland-looking, hard and cold.

The report, which was written following extensive public consultation, proposed an upgrade of the streetscape, additional planting and an increase in street activity.

In our view, the Clarence Hotel's plans for East Essex Street are sympathetic to these recommendations, with a proposal for an extended terrace, retail outlets and restaurant, all of which will have a distinct family friendly appeal.

Moreover, when complete, the revamped Clarence Hotel will be an extremely welcome addition to the tourism infrastructure in the area, providing a world-class facility and a powerful lift to Temple Bar and Dublin City.

With the pending closure of key hotels in Dublin city and the development of the National Convention Centre, there will be a growing demand for high quality hotel accommodation in the city centre. For these reasons, the extension and renovation of the Clarence Hotel should be welcomed and applauded. - Yours, etc,
