Madam, - I enjoyed John G. O'Dwyer's Irishman's Diary of August 28th and his lamentation that Ireland does not have an equivalent to the Scottish Munros. I wish him success with his proposal to develop a list of peaks in Ireland that might offer a challenge to Irish hill-walkers.
No Irish hill-walker or mountain climber should have an inferiority complex about Irish mountains being lower than Scottish ones. I have lived in Florida for the past 17 years. Florida boasts five "mountains" over 300 feet, the tallest being Britton Hill at 345 feet, which is almost twice as tall as Space Mountain, the indoor roller-coaster at Disney World.
Rock climbers have investigated climbing in sinkholes and caves but the limestone is too soft. The best option is to go to one of the climbing gyms which are cropping up all over the state.
I suppose frustrated hill-walkers could change to climbing stairs. The tallest building in Florida is the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami at 789 feet. The elevator can be summoned if fatigue sets in before the summit. - Yours, etc,
NOEL CAHILL, Kissimmee, Florida, USA.
