Madam, - The decision by Sinn Féin's policing board member, Martina Anderson MLA, to travel to the Irish Peace Tower in Belgium next month as part of a cross-community peace initiative marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Messines is welcome ( The Irish Times, May 24th). It should not be forgotten that many Irish, from both traditions on this island, fought in the Great War in defence of the rights of small nations.
It is to be hoped that perhaps next year's commemoration in Arbour Hill for those Irish who fought and died for the right of this small nation's independence will be attended by some unionist members of the Northern Assembly as their input into the cross-community peace initiative, thereby helping to build a better understanding of people from different traditions on this island. - Yours, etc,
TOM COOPER, Delaford Lawn, Dublin 16.
