Sir, – Danny Morrison (Letters, January 18th) roundly lectures the past and present governments of the Republic of Ireland (yes, Danny, the Republic of Ireland) on its failures to intervene in Northern Ireland. The New Ireland Forum, initiated by Garrett FitzGerald, is alleged to have been a mere ploy to boost the SDLP vote, but no direct evidence for this is presented. Why would the government of that period invite Sinn Féin to such a forum while the armed wing of that party was busily robbing banks and undermining the economy? Sorry, Danny, for reminding people of such details. – Yours, etc,
MARGARET LEE,
Newport,
Co Tipperary.
