Madam, - As a Corkonian, I read with interest Frank McDonald's article "Cork is ringing with confidence" (November 8th). I agree with much of what he wrote but I would like to comment on the city's development in recent years.
Here, as in most of Ireland, there seems to be an obsession with building apartments blocks. Many of these buildings are eyesores whose facades suggest that the cheapest of materials are used with regard to cladding, window fittings, and bare ugly galvanised balconies.
Such buildings are reminiscent of post-war Europe. However, then the buildings were a matter of urgency, and were built to house the many homeless people after the destruction of the Second Word War. Our buildings are not being built for any such noble purpose but rather to enrich further rich and greedy investors.
Am I paranoid, or do other Cork people agree? - Yours, etc.,
MARIE KIRWAN, Vineville, Shanakiel Road, Cork.
