Sir, – When we are told that up to 18,000 spectators will be able to attend the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship next weekend, surely there are enough innovative minds among the organisers of Dublin City Marathon to ensure this year's event goes ahead? ("Leinster hurling final and football semi-finals set for crowds of 18,000", Sports, July 9th)
It can still be held: limit the number of participants, stagger the start time for pods of 100 runners, ensure all participants are fully vaccinated and carry-out rapid antigen testing on the morning.
Yes, the Government has not been clear with the pathway to reopening , but to throw in the towel on this year’s event at this stage is defeatist. This is when sport can show the country the way.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
