Madam, - Environment Editor Frank McDonald refers to a report by the European Environmental Agency citing Dublin as a good example of a worst-case scenario of urban sprawl (The Irish Times, October 4th).

It does not take a report like this to identify how badly wrong we have got it or how weak our policies are to prevent such sprawl.

The power to rezone lands should be taken away from local councillors. They encourage this sprawl through their indiscriminate rezoning even in the face of opposition from planners and consultants as well as the wider community. - Yours, etc,
