Sir, – In light of all the various criticisms regarding incorrect location addresses, I wonder if our new postcode system should be renamed as Errcode? – Yours, etc,
JOE DALTON,
Dublin 7.
Sir, – What a pity the Eircode routing key (first three characters of the code) bear no relation to the name of the county.
There does not seem to be any justification for this apart from it being “language neutral”. Surely basing the routing key on county name would be more logical, as addresses in a given county appear to share the first character of the routing key anyway. Furthermore, Dublin will retain its language-biased prefixes because, to quote the website, “they have been in existence for many years and the public is very familiar with them”.
By extension of this reasoning, the car registration system needs a complete overhaul.
I would argue that a logical and intuitive alpha-numeric system in the predominant language of the State should take priority over “language neutrality”. – Yours, etc,
EILIS DONOHUE,
