Sir, – Just as we were considering a plug-in hybrid as our next car, the Government, pandering to its Green Coalition partners, has decided to cancel the proffered grants for these vehicles ("Grant incentives removed for plug-in hybrids", News, October 19th). While we could use a fully electric vehicle locally, we have seen the number of unavailable charging stations both in Ireland and the UK, plus we travel the length of France on a regular basis. So for now we will retain our faithful diesel and withdraw our vote for the miserly Green Party. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Can we knock on the head the myth that electric vehicles (EVs) are no use for rural dwellers?
Every rural dwelling I know has electricity, and even a basic three-pin plug can recharge any EV in Ireland. Furthermore rural dwellings mostly have the space to install a dedicated charger and even better have roofs to which they can attach solar panels to make their own electricity.
EVs are perfect for 99 per cent of rural dwellers. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – It is clear that certain private schools in the Booterstown area of Dublin are supporting a lesson for young people that the best way to travel in a climate emergency is in a large diesel road-blocking chauffeur-driven car or SUV. It is time for a curriculum update. – Yours, etc,
