Sir, – I am not sure why Fiona Daly (Letters, September 7th) is so perturbed by cars parking on footpaths. Doesn't she know that the car is king?
Here in Cork you can not only park on footpaths, but you can drive on them, park on pedestrian plazas on the Grand Parade, and drive down so-called pedestrianised streets. You can park in loading bays, you can drive on Patrick Street (the city’s main thoroughfare where private traffic is supposedly banned between 3pm and 6.30pm), you can park on double-yellow lines, you can drive on bus lanes, you can park on bike lanes, you can park on contra-flow bike lanes, forcing cyclists onto oncoming traffic. Those wanting to rebel against those pushing the sustainable, environmental, and healthier life agenda should move to the aptly named county. Cork is the real capital because people here don’t kowtow to rules telling them what they can and can’t do. When you’re in a car in Cork, you’re king! – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I share Fiona Daly’s concerns regarding parking on footpaths.
I have written time and again to Dublin City Council and all my local politicians about this problem in Kilmainham but to no avail. If and when I get an answer, it’s “We are aware of the problem and are monitoring it on a regular basis”.
I have witnessed parents pushing buggies and people in wheelchairs trying to get around this particular junction. On one occasion I witnessed a visually impaired young woman walk straight into a parked car. There appears to be no will to solve this fairly straightforward problem. – Yours, etc,
