FUTURE OF THE LABOUR PARTY

SEAN LYNCH,

SEAN LYNCH,

Sir, - Despite the hackneyed protestations of the hard left, the Labour Party is still a party of the mainstream left. Labour remains a radical party committed to creating a fairer, more equal society. However, radical aspirations are useless without the policies to achieve them.

Unlike the simplistic sloganising of Sinn Féin or the pie-in-the-sky policies of the Green Party, Labour has developed a wide range of clearly thought out and costed policies that would deliver fundamental change. For example, the LabourParty stands alone in proposing a radical, detailed and workable plan to transform the health service. By introducing universal health insurance and paying for those who can't afford to, the present two-tier system would be abolished and people's lives would be improved.

It's easy for some of the smaller parties to make seemingly radical proposals, as they know they will not be in government and cannot be blamed for their half-baked plans failing. In contrast, the Labour Party knows it must be responsible as well as radical; this way it will deliver real change and radically improve real peoples' lives. - Yours, etc.,
